Urinary Glucuronidase and Arylsulfatases in Identical Twins of Bladder Cancer Patients1

چکیده
Studies showing that bladder cancer patients have unusually high levels of urinary 0-glucuronidase and arylsulfatases A and B led to the suggestion that these urinary enzymes may partici pate in bladder cancer etiology. An alternative explanation of the high levels of these urinary enzymes in bladder cancer patients is that the disease itself causes the elevation. Since the levels of these enzymes are genetically determined, measuring these enzymes in healthy identical twins of bladder cancer patients can test whether high enzyme levels occurred prior to bladder cancer. Five healthy identical cotwins of bladder cancer patients, together with matched controls, were measured for urinary ßglucuronidase, arylsulfatases A and B, and two other lysosomal enzymes as controls, aand 0-galactosidases. The mean levels of all five enzymes were not very different in the cotwins and controls, suggesting that high levels of urinary enzymes ob served in bladder cancer patients are a consequence of disease rather than occurring prior to disease and contributing to its etiology.

Studies showing that bladder cancer patients have unusually high levels of urinary beta-glucuronidase and arylsulfatases A and B led to the suggestion that these urinary enzymes may participate in bladder cancer etiology. An alternative explanation of the high levels of these urinary enzymes in bladder cancer patients is that the disease itself causes the elevation. Since the levels of these en...
متن کاملReview Article: Application of Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy in Bladder Cancer Screening
Introduction Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy in elderly people and most bladder cancers are transitional cell carcinomas (TCC). Bladder pathology is usually investigated visually by cystoscopy and this technique can represent different conditions ranging from simple inflammation to flat CIS. However, biopsies must be taken from the suspected area to obtain diagnostic information. T...
متن کاملA case of conjoined twins (thoraco-omphalopygopagus tribrachius tetrapus) in lamb
Sheep conjoined twins have been reported less than cow. An apparently female conjoined twin lambs was examined based on external and internal features. In radiology, two vertebral columns and two pairs of the ribs were seen. Only two heads and two necks were separated (thoraco-omphalopygopagus). There were three forelimbs (tribrachius), one of which grew on dorsal region as a notomelus. Teat b...
متن کاملFailure of urinary beta-glucuronidase activity to localize the site of urinary tract infection.
The differentiation of renal from bladder bacteriuria is difficult on clinical grounds alone. To evaluate the correlation between site of infection and urinary beta-glucuronidase activity, 46 patients with well documented recurrent bacteriuria were studied by bilateral ureteral catheterization. Urinary beta-glucuronidase activity was also determined in 46 control subjects. In general, asymptoma...
متن کاملTwo Techniques of Tonsillectomy Performed in Identical Twins: A Case Report
Introduction:Cold dissection (CD) and bipolar cautery dissection (BCD) techniques are two common surgical tonsillectomy procedures used in the clinic. Obstruction has become more prevalent as the major surgical indication and is most prominently observed in younger children.Case Report: In this report, we aimed to explain the abovementioned surgical techniques in detail and compare the results...
